Is It Worth It To Learn a Complicated System?

October 20, 2014

There are a lot of people who believe they can learn how to count cards and win money at blackjack, and if you are one of those people, we welcome you to the arena. But if you are just venturing out on this journey, there are some things we should probably explain to you.

There is always going to be the idea that if you are playing a counting and betting system that is more "involved," you will have a better chance at success. This makes sense in a certain way, because it looks as if there is more exactitude in such a thing. And because a potential card counter has to look in a lot of different places for those little "edges," it stands to reason that if there is more "science" associated with, the better off you are.

But it also might makes more sense for you to think again. You have to remember what characterizes the process by which success is derived in card counting. One of the most important things is that you must be able to keep up with a card count at the table and do so accurately. In fact, failure to do so even once or twice over the course of an hour will essentially forfeit the edge you have worked so hard to attain. That's not necessarily the way you want to go.

But it is the place where you may end up if you insist on employing a very complicated count that can contribute to inaccuracies. Can you imagine not even KNOWING you have made a mistake and continuing forward? It would be as if you were making a mistake on every single subsequent hand.

The rule of thumb is that when you are endeavoring to become successful at the game, what you really want is to do as many different things as possible without having to even think about it, as if it was second nature. That way you can pay attention to other things that make a difference. You want to be able to keep the count almost instinctively so you can think about the playing variations and betting strategy that will ultimately help make the difference between being a winner and a loser.

That is generally not going to happen if you are not fast as lightning in being able to immediately ascertain card combinations, adding up combinations of combinations. If you stumble, the game is going to pass you by. And you will have defeated the purpose of playing a card count in the first place.
